I am often asked if it is possible to get somehow a glimpse of which keywords are being used by the competitors’ AdWords accounts. There is no insight into the account, but we can look into the database of SEMrush. Through regular crawl, we can see which keyword has an ad for which URL. And we get the desired insight.

To do this, go to the Domain Analytics tab and then click on Ad search. In the tab Positions, you now have a nice overview. On the one hand, you can see the traffic graph on the right. Here you can see immediately if your competition spends more in certain months and holds back in other months. Do not forget to switch to German if you do not get reasonable values ​​here.

In the table then, very classic, all that matters: Keyword, URL and some other values, which I do not use.

How do you now see the keywords that you DO NOT operate? Go to the right side of Advanced Mode and then you have to choose between the domains Unique for the keywords of the first domain. Click on Go and look at the result.

Finally, a very exciting topic: which ads run better in your competition and which worse?

In the best case, of course, to get exact numbers you need access to the AdWords account, but with SEMrush you also have a little trick on how to see which ad is likely to perform best.

Go to Domain Analytics and then to Ad search. There you will find the report on Ad History. As always, you simply enter the domain of your competition here (if you have not already done so) and see what the results show you:

For each keyword, you’ll see ads here. So, over the course of a year, you can see exactly which ads were running and how they were changed.

To be clear, this data does not reflect the complete picture. Only one ad is shown, but I’ve tested it manually many times before and I’ve seen that many different ads are often used. But this is not about a 1: 1 copy, but about plenty of input for your own ideas and to see how the competition works in general.

So, if you see an ad as it does all year round, then we can assume that it works just fine. This becomes even clearer when an ad runs with another ad text for a month and then returns to the original text for the next.
