Where is your competition? An overview
The functionality of SEMrush is really simple: Enter domain/keyword, and you get all relevant data in an overview. If you want, you can then go into the details. There are two important things in the first place:
What is the evolution of your competitors?
If the traffic development of the competition is negative, you should consider whether that is really still your competition or there are other players in the market, which are probably worth a look. A look at this graph will help you:
The second point is the organic rankings in Google – a classic.
There is a corresponding report under Trend – Organic Research – Positions.
Which contents of your competition are the strongest?
The very exciting question, right? Where does the competition attract most of Google traffic? The answer can be found in just a few clicks. Open Domain Analytics, then Organic Research and click on Pages.
Voila! – Here you have the appropriate URL, as well as for how muchpercent of the traffic the URL is responsible and how many keywords refer to this URL.
You now have the opportunity to go deeper, for example, by clicking on the URL. You will be shown any backlinks and the individual keywords. Just look at the content of the URL, what is done well? What can be improved? How does your content compare in comparison?

Here are some terms with matching search volume. So maybe you can find here terms that you have not yet on the screen. In the next step, look at what type of content your competitor uses here to get his rankings. Just click on the corresponding keyword. In the next window, you will immediately see the organic search results at a glance.
Backlinks are important. That’s no secret. So, it is all the more important to continue to get one or the other good backlink. In order to simplify the work in the first step, you simply use a reporting from SEMrush.
The whole thing gets even better if you tapped your competition again for research. Thematically you should indeed cover similar areas, and therefore it may well be that who links to your competition also like to link to your website.
Let’s take a look at this:
If you have not yet typed in the URL of your competition, you can do that now. Or you just take the websites that the tool shows you as competition. Just go to backlinks under Domain Analytics. Then again on backlinks. The table gives you all the important and necessary information: title, anchor text, destination URL, and origin URL and a little more.
With the filter option, you can now also filter for domain extensions or, which I find quite interesting, by type. For example, you can choose Images for Type. Give it a try and see how the backlinks came about.
Now you can export the table and then evaluate it in peace.
I am often asked if it is possible to get somehow a glimpse of which keywords are being used by the competitors’ AdWords accounts. There is no insight into the account, but we can look into the database of SEMrush. Through regular crawl, we can see which keyword has an ad for which URL. And we get the desired insight.
To do this, go to the Domain Analytics tab and then click on Ad search. In the tab Positions, you now have a nice overview. On the one hand, you can see the traffic graph on the right. Here you can see immediately if your competition spends more in certain months and holds back in other months. Do not forget to switch to German if you do not get reasonable values here.
In the table then, very classic, all that matters: Keyword, URL and some other values, which I do not use.
Values like CPC, search volume, and resulting values like% Traffic and% costs are well known from the Keyword Planner, and also there you should not really pay much attention to the numbers. They work well for a ranking, but not for more.
Keywords of your competition that you do not yet cover and that you have in common
Here I extend the point number 7 because there is still a really cool report that fits on this topic. This report shows you keywords that you share with your competition and those that you do not already have, but your competitors.

How do you get there? Again, Domain Analytics helps us.
Here you simply type in your domain and then your competition. As long as you do not have an account, you can compare a total of 3 domains. With an account, you can make a comparison of up to 5 domains.
And now comes the trick: you can choose between keyword types. So Organic, PLA, and Paid. PLA does not work so well, but organic and paid show exciting insights.
How do you now see the keywords that you DO NOT operate? Go to the right side of Advanced Mode and then you have to choose between the domains Unique for the keywords of the first domain. Click on Go and look at the result.
Discover new monetarization possibilities:
With the reports from SEMrush and some creativity, webmasters can quickly find new ideas to monetarize the website. What idea is behind it? If you have your own page and would like to tend to certain keywords in the top 10 or top 3, you need good content, depending on the competition sufficient backlinks and of course a lot of time.
AdWords already gives the first aid: Top positions against advertising budget. The next option is to place ads on sites that are already in top positions. If you are in the situation where you have good rankings, but you do not feel like traditional ways like AdSense or Affiliate, read on:
To start, you enter your domain again. Then under Domain Analytics, click on Organic Research and on Competitors.
Here is the goldmine:
At the far right of the table are Ads keywords. There you choose a competitor who invests a lot in advertising (financially strong). The next step is the click on common keywords. This page will be familiar to you.
Now you just choose the competition instead of Organic Keywords – Paid Keywords. Click on Go and look at the result. If you still sort by rankings of your page from top to flop, you know what you can offer.
High CPC indicates high potential
You can now export this table directly and of course, prepare something else. Then you will have a wonderful PDF document that will allow you to approach your potential new affiliates and offer them a (paid) partnership.
How difficult is the ranking for keyword X?
Good question. Of course, with clean keyword research, this can be very well estimated, but not always, you will have enough time to really do a clean search for a number of keywords.
In this case, it makes sense to get a quick overview of which keywords are easy prey and which are more of a teaser. The tool for this is under Keyword Analytics and then at the bottom Keyword Difficulty.
Ads History : What works for your competition?
Finally, a very exciting topic: which ads run better in your competition and which worse?
In the best case, of course, to get exact numbers you need access to the AdWords account, but with SEMrush you also have a little trick on how to see which ad is likely to perform best.
Go to Domain Analytics and then to Ad search. There you will find the report on Ad History. As always, you simply enter the domain of your competition here (if you have not already done so) and see what the results show you:
For each keyword, you’ll see ads here. So, over the course of a year, you can see exactly which ads were running and how they were changed.
To be clear, this data does not reflect the complete picture. Only one ad is shown, but I’ve tested it manually many times before and I’ve seen that many different ads are often used. But this is not about a 1: 1 copy, but about plenty of input for your own ideas and to see how the competition works in general.
So, if you see an ad as it does all year round, then we can assume that it works just fine. This becomes even clearer when an ad runs with another ad text for a month and then returns to the original text for the next.
I hope these 10.1 hints give you enough new input to gain another advantage over your competition with SEMrush. There are many more things possible, and that was certainly not the end – so have fun experimenting!
